Teach your dog to "lay down"

Get some tips and tricks to helping your dog become a well-obedient and well-trained dog. Watch this video tutorial to see how to teach your dog to "lay down".

Take some dog treats and your dog into a quiet room. Hold a treat just in front of your dog's nose. Slowly draw it down and between your dog's front legs, towards the ground. Don't give any commands at this stage. If your dog has a hard time with this, hold the treat under a chair or table where he'll have to lay down to get to it. Repeat until your dog is lying down quickly when he sees the food move.

Not entirely Thorndike/Skinner operant learning but should definately work. Use one-word commands and make sure the pet can make the contingency between the cue (command), the operation ("down"), and the reward. Timing and consistency is key early on. I particularly like this presentation because it mentions going to an intermittent schedule of reinforcement after the behavior is established. This way the subject (pet) is more likely to continue the behavior, uncertain when it will be reinforced. Good job.
